Formulation Chemist – Hair Color

A fast growing, well established international company is looking for a self-driven, energetic, and highly motivated Formulation Chemist to join their team. The company is committed to developing an impeccable team and servicing their distributor and customer network.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and formulate finished products to showcase hair dyes and hair dye blends for:
    • Color enhancing shampoos, conditioners, and masks.
    • Color depositing gels, lotions, liquids, creams, and foam products to cover gray and/or color hair (semi-permanent, demi-permanent, permanent, and auto-oxidative hair color).
    • Bleach and lightening products.
  • Evaluate performance of new and existing hair dyes and provide direction/feedback to Synthesis Group, Supply Chain, and QC department.
  • Author, create, review, revise, update, and approve quality documents (product specifications, standard operating procedures, and safety data sheets).
  • Perform stability testing on newly developed product lines. Develop new and improve existing product lines.
  • New shade development and color matching.
  • Meet with raw material suppliers and test raw materials.
  • Maintain contact with raw material suppliers and retain knowledge of new products/trends related to hair color industry.
  • Oversee, manage, and maintain formula database (Formulator and Regulator).

Quality Control

  • Perform Quality Control on finished products using the following techniques/instruments:
    • pH/pH meter
    • Viscosity/Viscometer
    • Color on Hair/Color Spectrophotometer
    • Active Oxygen/Titration
    • Troubleshoot Production Batches

Training/Education

  • Provide Education, Training, and Technical Support as follows:
    • Facilitate workshops (theoretical and practical) on color theory.
    • Provide Distributor training for all company’s products and services.
    • Provide on-going technical support for customers and distributors.
    • Provide technical information to marketing for collateral and proofread copy where appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Ability to study the composition and properties of hair color and hair care products.
  • Ability to evaluate formulas, interpret results, and communicate improvements.
  • Ability to use and operate laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Color matching experience required.
  • Experience with powder dispersion and emulsions required.
  • Mathematical skills in calculation are paramount.
  • Impeccable multi-tasking, organization, and time management skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and solid independent decision making abilities.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.
  • A strong team player with a positive and professional attitude and a strong bias for action to solve challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to attend meetings and seminars as requested and report on content.
  • Ability to supervise technicians, entry-level chemists, and temporary employees as company expands.
  • Ability to provide technical advice, support, guidance, and development to less experienced team members.
  • Willing to travel internationally (primarily for training purposes).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry OR HEAVY experience in an R&D Hair Color Laboratory.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience required.
  • Must be proficient in computer based software (Formulator, Regulator, CIE Color QC, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
